WORKSHOP w/ David Park
September 1st 1pm-3pm (open to all levels)
Are you ready to take your improv game to the next level? Ready to add another ball to the complex juggling game that improv can be? Then “Exploring the Narrative” is the right workshop for you.
Whether it’s genre-based or not, we will go after making the story work in a series of exercises designed to get every member of the ensemble on the same page narratively, without losing improv fundamentals or standard gameplay. Through this workshop your shows will become more clear and satisfying from a story-telling standpoint for both the players and audience.
Cost: $50
Early registration: $40 (sign up by aug 30th)
INTERMEDIATE WORKSHOP w/ SUZI BARRETT
September 16th 6pm-9pm (must have some improv experience)
What is the “game of the scene?” Why should I worry about this? Isn’t who/what/where enough?
Who/what/where is a wonderful vehicle… but “game” will make your scenes GO! In this workshop, we will work on giving your scenes focus and purpose by identifying and playing game. Practice finding games in organic scenes, as well as starting scenes with a game in mind. We’ll also work your scenework muscles– playing with environment and emotion, rather than doing “talking head” scenes. Improv is a live artform, which means good improv should be good theatre!
Cost: $55
Early registration: $45 (sign up by Sept 7th)
2-day ADVANCED WORKSHOP w/ SUZI BARRETT
September 17th & 18th 7pm-9pm (must be approved by improvhi)
This two-day workshop will tackle a variety of advanced concepts. In day one, we’ll apply the UCB philosophy of “game” to your Harolds. You’ll learn how to pull games from your opening and apply them to your first beats; you’ll also learn how to initiate second beats that follow game rather than plot. Learn the difference between analogous games and time-dash games, and practice choosing the one that best serves your harold.
On day two, we’ll focus less on two-person scenes, and more on group work. We’ll give your group games a face lift by exploring a world of different group game varieties, and deepen your Harolds with organic edits. With remaining time, we’ll discuss and play with other advanced forms.
Cost: $100
Early registration: $90 (sign up by Sept 7th)
