Through cold reading auditions\, script analysis and scene work\, actors will learn essential tools to aid them in the business of acting. She holds her Masters in Acting from one of the top grad schools in the country\, UC San Diego. While in Los Angeles\, she starred as Heather Chandler in the world premiere of Heathers: The Musical. Other professional TV and Film Credits include: “Anger Management\,” “Cristela\,” “Road Hard\,” with comedian Adam Carolla\, and numerous national commercials. Sarah has had experiences testing for top network pilots\, and circulating with the most prominent casting directors in Los Angeles and New York. Since moving home\, she was featured in the Hawaii premiere of Mamma Mia! at Diamond Head Theatre\, and received a Po’okela award for her performance. SUMMARY:Comedy Writing Classes
DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop… \nDay One: Sketch Writing In this class you will learn how to write a sketch from start to finish using the Upright Citizens Brigade “game of the scene” structure.  You can bring in premises that we will flush out.  Bring in already written sketches and we will simulate a real writers room to punch it up.  How to write topical sketches\, character sketches and more.  We will also spend time focusing on how to hone your comedic voice through sketch.  \nDay Two: Sketch Performing In this class we will learn how to better perform sketch comedy.  We will use already existing sketches to learn the best way to get the most laughs.  Using the “game of the scene” we will hone in on what is funny about the scene and how can we maximize it.  We will then focus on creating characters and how to use those characters in a showcase.  Bring in exiting characters and learn tricks to make them stand out.   \nAbout the Instructor… \nHolly is from Toronto\, Canada.  While performing comedy there\, she won a Canadian Comedy Award for best sketch troupe\, as a member of The Sketchersons.  She joined the Second City Touring Company and also won MTV’s Yo Mamma: Canada. In 2008\, she attended The Sundance Film Festival\, where her film The Funeral was an official selection.  She has appeared on IFC’s Comedy Bang Bang and The Birthday Boys. \nHolly can now be seen performing at Upright Citizens Brigade Los Angeles.  Last year she was asked to take over hosting duties of UCBTLA longest running weekly show “Not Too Shabby” hosting with Alana Johnston.  She has appeared in countless Funny Or Die videos and is now appearing on “The UCB Show” on Sesso with Alana.  This year Vulture named their sketch one of the best of 2016 check it out here: http://www.vulture.com/2016/07/best-comedy-sketches-of-2016-so-far.html \nClass Deets… \nLevel: Open to all levels. DESCRIPTION:Master workshops presented by The 2016 Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival \nINTRO TO SKETCH COMEDY WRITING(for beginning and aspiring writers who have little to no experience in sketch comedy writing): \nStudents will be introduced to the fundamentals of good sketch writing\, with a strong emphasis on the “game” of your scenes. We’ll watch a few classic sketches and discuss what makes them work effectively\, then practice pulling ideas for sketches from every day interactions and anecdotes from life. \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:\nAnn Maddox has been writing and performing at Upright Citizens Brigade Theater Los Angeles since it opened in 2005. She has performed improv with her Harold team Lincoln’s Bedroom\, and written sketches for her Maude teams Nice Kitchen and Hot Mess. She wrote radio sketches for Marketplace on NPR and was a writer/performer for the 2011 CBS Diversity Showcase. She has appeared in several national and regional commercials\, and television shows such as The Office\, Two Broke Girls\, Garfunkle and Oates\, The Birthday Boys and Grandfathered. She will soon be appearing on ABC’s The Real O’Neals\, premiering this March!

DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop:\nWhat is the “game of the scene?” Why should I worry about this? Isn’t who/what/where enough? Who/what/where is a wonderful vehicle… but “game” will make your scenes GO! In this workshop\, we will work on giving your scenes focus and purpose by identifying and playing game. Practice finding games in organic scenes\, as well as starting scenes with a game in mind. We’ll also work your scenework muscles– playing with environment and emotion\, rather than doing “talking head” scenes. Improv is a live artform\, which means good improv should be good theatre!\n*this is an intermediate/advanced workshop. Participants should have some improv experience and be familiar with improv terms. \nAbout the Instructor:\nSuzi Barrett has been studying/performing/teaching improv for 13 years. She began in Chicago\, as a student of The Second City and ImprovOlympic\, and is a graduate of the Upright Citizens Brigade training center in L.A. (where she currently teaches). Suzi spent three years as a member of the famed Boom Chicago sketch and improv ensemble in Amsterdam\, and toured most of Europe with their touring company. She currently lives in L.A.\, where she plays with the UCB house team Sentimental Lady and the acclaimed two-person improv team Elephants Gerald\, and frequently appears with Gravid Water\, Soundtrack\, and UCB’s improvised musical: Diamond Lion. She is a member of the UCB national touring company\, has appeared in over 30 national commercials\, and writes for Funny or Die and ABC’s Wipeout. SUMMARY:UCB Style Improv w/ Matt Newell
DESCRIPTION:This class will focus on finding the “Game” of the scene through listening and grounded scene work. The game of the scene means being aware of what makes your scenes funny and focusing on it as the scene progresses and is the cornerstone of UCB style improv. \nAbout the Instructor: \nMatt Newell is an improvisor\, actor and writer from Youngsville\, NC. He began studying improv at Comedy Sportz in Chapel Hill\, NC and then continued at The Upright Citizens Brigade when he moved to Los Angeles. He’s been performing at UCB since 2010 on Harold Night with Kid Grift and Outside Dog and on Maude Night with The Royal Bermuda Whiskey Club.
