DESCRIPTION:Improvaganza! The Hawaii Festival of Improv is a gathering and celebration of Improvised theatre in all its diverse expressions. It is Hawaii’s only international festival dedicated to Improv comedy and improvised theatre. Improvisers from all over the world come to Honolulu for a weekend of improv performances\, workshops\, and events. In past years we’ve welcomed improvisers from Aiea\, Austin\, Atlanta\, Chicago\, Dallas\, Honolulu\, Kailua-Kona\, Los Angeles\, Minneapolis\, New York\, Phoenix\, San Diego\, San Francisco\, Seattle\, and as far away as Melbourne Australia\, Auckland New Zealand\, Turin Italy\, Rio De Janerio Brazil\, Paris France\, Stockholm Sweden and Tokyo Japan.\n\nThe festival strives to cultivate Hawaii’s local improv community by showcasing local and mainland improvisers while providing opportunities for them to network with each other. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: Quite often we find that our improv scenes begin at the beginning. This usually waists time\, resulting in the audience watching the improvisers figure out what the scene is about. If we start in the middle of the scene and we are already in action than the scene gets a rolling start. Through exercises and drills this workshopexplores the first moments of a scene\, which are crucial. Through creation and acceptance\, starting in the middle\, and checking in with our partner we have the opportunity to create scene starts as explosive as a Michael Bay film. Learn to create with conviction\, yes and all the glory your partners serve up\, and launch into action from the beginning. \nINTRUCTORS BIO: Marcus Sams is a working actor / teaching artist in the Bay Area. In the Improv World\, Sams performs regularly with Leela’s Armando Company. “Blair N’ Sams” and in “Shade of Grey” who will be performing at this year’s Improvaganza. She has directed over 100 original productions with Leela\, is the Founder/Executive Producer of Femprovisor Fest and serves as a Producer/Board Member for The San Francisco Improv Festival. She is also a marriage and family therapist\, drama therapist\, and self revelatory theatre director who continues to teach the therapeutic benefits of improvisation. SUMMARY:Improvaganza 2015 Workshops: Ensemble Approach to Improvisation
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: Individual talent makes a scene good\, but working as a team makes a scene great. In this workshop we will explore what it takes to be a true ensemble member. We will practice techniques of both verbal and non-verbal collaboration\, staying in-synch with your scene partner\, playing off each other’s strengths\, and delivering a performance that is larger than the sum of its parts. At least part of the class will focus on working as an ensemble to create strong environments.\nThis workshop is great for those of you who are familiar with the foundational elements of improvisation and want to take your improv skills to the next level. If you’re considering starting\, or have already started\, your own troupe\, then this is the perfect class for you (however this is not a prerequisite)  \nINSTRUCTORS BIO:\nRish Sanghvi has been studying\, performing and teaching improvisation in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2007. In that time he has brought innovative and culturally diverse formats to the stage including improvised Bollywood\, and improvised kung-fu. In founding a few successful improv troupes (and several questionable one’s) he has developed a curiosity for exploring what makes and ensemble tick. This month learn to communicate with your partners\, in other words listening and giving information\, and teamwork. \nOctober’s Improv Drop-In improv skills classes are focused on making a better communicator. \nWHERE: HiFi COOP\, Ward Warehouse\, 1050 Ala Moana Blvd\, STE 2580 Honolulu\, Hawaii 96813\nWHEN: Every Tuesday in October\nTIMES: 7:30pm\nTICKETS: $10/class or $35 for the month\nClasses start promptly at 7:30 every Tuesday. Aaron continues to teach\, host\, and perform improv at multiple venues including Station Bar and Lounge\, Ong King Art Center\, Hawaiian Brian’s\, The Studio and Hfi COOP. \nAaron is a real foodie and loves ‘P’ Foods: pancakes\, potatoes\, and probably pickles. DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop:\nWhat is the “game of the scene?” Why should I worry about this? Isn’t who/what/where enough? Who/what/where is a wonderful vehicle… but “game” will make your scenes GO! In this workshop\, we will work on giving your scenes focus and purpose by identifying and playing game. Practice finding games in organic scenes\, as well as starting scenes with a game in mind. We’ll also work your scenework muscles– playing with environment and emotion\, rather than doing “talking head” scenes. Improv is a live artform\, which means good improv should be good theatre!\n*this is an intermediate/advanced workshop. Participants should have some improv experience and be familiar with improv terms. \nAbout the Instructor:\nSuzi Barrett has been studying/performing/teaching improv for 13 years. She began in Chicago\, as a student of The Second City and ImprovOlympic\, and is a graduate of the Upright Citizens Brigade training center in L.A. (where she currently teaches). Suzi spent three years as a member of the famed Boom Chicago sketch and improv ensemble in Amsterdam\, and toured most of Europe with their touring company. She currently lives in L.A.\, where she plays with the UCB house team Sentimental Lady and the acclaimed two-person improv team Elephants Gerald\, and frequently appears with Gravid Water\, Soundtrack\, and UCB’s improvised musical: Diamond Lion. She is a member of the UCB national touring company\, has appeared in over 30 national commercials\, and writes for Funny or Die and ABC’s Wipeout. His original improvised song formats\, “The Hell Show” and “Tiny and Les\,” have been performed at BATS\, ACME Hollywood and Impro Theatre. Brian’s ongoing Wednesday night Improvised Song workshop is now in it’s second year. He was the Theatre Games consultant for Francis Ford Coppola on Bram Stoker’s Dracula (working with Gary Oldman\, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Tom Waits) and dialogue coach on Mr. Coppola’s 1996 feature Jack\, with Robin Williams\, Diane Lane and Jennifer Lopez. He teaches personal presentation skills for the private sector and has been the program director for public persona development in SEIU’s BOLD Institute since 2003. Brian was casting director and composer for BOO! at New York New York Hotel and Casino\, a Las Vegas improv-sketch revue in which he starred from 2002-2003. Brian was the creator and Artistic Director of Pulp Playhouse\, which was in residency at San Francisco’s Eureka Theater and was the first improvisation group to be invited to HBO’s U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. He has written three solo shows\, Johnny Lonely’s Unhappy Hour\, Seasonal Help and Captaining Titanic Leadership. He was a fringe finalist at the Adelaide Fringe in Australia for Johnny Lonely\, opened for Tenacious D at Largo in Los Angeles and headlined the Seattle Film Festival. International tours include London\, Edinburgh\, Amsterdam\, Melbourne AUS\, Seattle and San Francisco.  \nActors who want to improvise\, Improvisers who want to act: 
join instructor Bobbi Block for a half-day workshop exploring the Actors’ Improv Technique™.


This workshop teaches a honed method to create truth-inspired\, emotionally grounded characters and build compelling realistic scenes.  Just as writers are advised to ‘write what they know\,’ participants are taught to improvise from their own experiences and meld fact with fiction. This method allows both comic and dramatic moments to arise organically.  Participants learn to create a strong emotional point of view\, exploring both verbal and nonverbal offers (silence\, breathing\, physical contact with scene partner).   Participants also learn how to simultaneously behave as both actor and playwright to build the tension and dramatic arc of a scene.  When this method is integrated\, the result combines the playfulness of spontaneously-generated work with the integrity of scripted theater. \nOPEN TO ALL LEVELS 12pm – 3pm \nInstructor Bio:   \nBobbi Block is the Founder/Producing Artistic Director of the critically acclaimed Tongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater.  Tongue & Groove works in the style of Actors Improv taught in this workshop.  For more information and to view video clips of T&G shows\, go to tongue-groove.com. 

Bobbi was invited to create LEAP: The Actors’ Improv Experiment\, for the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival\, for which she taught and directed veteran scripted actors in their first improvised show.  Bobbi improvises with Barrymore Award recipient ComedySportz Philadelphia\, where she was the Co-Producer and Education Director for 15 years and Artistic Director for 2 years. (comedysportzphilly.com) \nIn addition\, she performed longform improv for twelve years with the popular collaborative five-member ensemble\, LunchLady Doris\, and performed with the interdisciplinary improvisational theatre company\, Playback Philadelphia.

Bobbi has a Masters degree in Theatre\, and has trained with master improvisors at renowned improv theaters around the US. \nShe currently teaches Improvisation at Temple University and Drexel University in Philadelphia.  She taught Improv at New Zealand’s University of Otago and throughout New Zealand and Australia.  She returned to NZ to direct her signature format\, SECRETS\, for the New Zealand Fringe Festival.  In addition\, she has toured Europe teaching Actors’ Improv to various improv groups\, and has also taught Improv in Rio De Janeiro\, Brazil\, where SECRETS continues to be performed. \nShe won the 2008 Philadelphia City Paper Award: Actress Who Will Lead Improvisation to the Promised Land.

Mindfulness. Being in the present. The best of us can respond to what is happening at the moment. Good performers act in the present. Improv is all about letting go and just being present. \nFebruary’s Improv Skills Drop-In improv classes are focused on getting you out of your head and into the present. Topics to be discovered this month include: proactive vs. reactive\, focusing on the moment\, listening\, and supporting your partner. \nWHERE: HiFi COOP\, Ward Warehouse\, 1050 Ala Moana Blvd\, STE 2580 Honolulu\, Hawaii 96813\nWHEN: Every Tuesday in February\nTIMES: 7:30pm\nTICKETS: $10/class or $35 for the month\nClasses start promptly at 7:30 every Tuesday. Classes run until 9:30. \nOur Improv Skills are every Tuesday and open to everyone regardless of improv experience level.  If you’ve never improvised before\, that’s great!  Our instructors are gentle and have plenty of experience to share. \nFor questions or more information on classes: e-mail us info[at]thinkfastimprov.com or call Aaron at (808) 728-7146. \nAbout The Instructors \nDavid Bachler\nDavid Bachler has been studying & performing Improv with Think Fast since 2011.  Mr. Bachler has also been seen on the musical theatre stages on Oahu\, Cabaret and Legally Blonde at Diamond Head Theatre\, as well as Next to Normal and Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein at Manoa Valley Theatre.  He has done commercial work for Outrigger Hotels and co-starred in Parenthood: The Musical for BabyCenter.com. \nMr. Bachler found his roots in performing back in high school where he studied drama for 3 years. He has also studied and performed with Olympic Ballet Theatre\, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and Pacific Northwest Ballet. \n  \nBen St John\nBen St. John\, originally from South Carolina\, got his start in improvisational comedy in 2013 at the Laughtrack Theater. Ben has also studied under Rory and Larissa Franzen\, Aaron Pughes\, David K Jones\, Kimee Balmilero\, Jimmy Carrane and Brian Lohmann in one “form” (improv pun) or another. Enough name dropping for one bio. Just know that he loves Improv and Sketch Comedy. Ben has been performing ever since in multiple teams and formats and became a member of Think Fast Improv in 2014.
