SUMMARY:IO West Patrick Babbit's Workshop: The Pretty Flower
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Babbitt of IO West will be in Honolulu for a one night workshop teaching the format “The Pretty Flower.”Some improv experience or training is required for this workshop. This workshop is the launch the Art of Improv: Level 3 – Format and Form program. Pretty Flower and it’s variants will be taught\, practiced\, and refined for the first 8 week program. \n20 spaces available.\n$30 Early Registration until July 21st.\n$50 General Registration after.\nWorkshop to be held at HIFI COOP located at Ward Warehouse\, Level 2 (above T&C\, across from Other Realms Comics) \nABOUT THE FORM –\nby Patrick Babbitt\n“Pretty Flower” is a form that centers around a group scene. Two (or more) actors break off and do a new scene to explore a character from the initial group game. Throughout the show we continue to return to the group scene as well as break off from it to explore characters. The center of the flower is the Group Scene and the pedals are the exploratory Two Person Scenes. It’s a great form for a group that is looking for another option than the Harold. \nABOUT PATRICK-\nPatrick studied and performed at Second City and IO in Chicago before moving to Los Angeles where he performs at IO West with the House Harold team Tub Step. He is also part of the sketch show Hot Butt which performs at Second City Hollywood\, UCB and the Comedy Central Stage. He can be seen on NBC’s Community as well as Newsreaders on Adultswim. He has taught workshops at Chicago Center of the Performing Arts\, Lollapalooza\, Indianapolis Fringe and at Theatre Sports Vancouver. \n

DESCRIPTION:Mark Beltzman is coming back to Oahu!  We got A LOT of great feedback from his last workshops and we are SUPER excited to welcome him back to the islands! \nThe ART OF ALLOWING IMPROV WORKSHOP is for the ensemble actor and improvisor who desires to cultivate the ability to flawlessly and spontaneously create magic on stage and in life. “IT” comes from a place of joy and connection to one’s source intuition\, and is attained by giving yourself to the art form through LISTENING rather than thinking\, from ALLOWING rather than forcing\, from being FULLY PRESENT in the moment and FOCUSING on CONNECTION with your partner and your environment. You will understand why making your partner look good makes you in turn look twice as good and makes the work flow. Ultimately\, you will understand that this is how ensemble is created. \nThis workshop will focus on scene work. You will learn to develop tools to let scenes emerge organically\, including: \ncultivating a heightened sense of listening\ncultivating a heightened sense of awareness of the scene around you\, i.e. environment\, textures\, emotions\, body languages\, sounds\, etc.\nlearning the game within the scene\nmaking your partner look good\nfinding the joy in the exploration\ngetting out of your own way to allow creativity to flow\nunderstanding that the true magic lies in the synchronicity of you\, your partner and the audience all discovering a point of focus at the same time \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:\nMark Beltzman has been acting\, writing and directing since 1981. He was a founding member of Improv Olympic in Chicago and of the legendary group\, Barons Barracudas. Mark has worked and directed at the famed Second City in Chicago. He directed many improvisational and theatrical productions at Second City in Chicago and Los Angeles\, including the Second City Alumni Jam. He was also instructor/director at The Second City Training Center\, Improv Olympic West and the Upfront Comedy Showcase as well as all over the UK\, London\, Brighton and Bristol. They have been writing together since 2011. Lewis is a stand-up comic and improviser. Jones and Nielsen write and produce the web series\, Someplace Classy and are founding members of the local improv comedy company Think Fast. DESCRIPTION:The Cinema Game is Jean Louis Barreault’s exercise that teaches you everything you need to know about acting (except voice). Learn to develop complementary characters\, strong needs\, powerful transitions\, subtlety\, physical awareness\, team work and create wonderful stories all in silence. 3 strangers enter a cinema with no direct communication they gradually become aware of each other and begin to interact changing each others lives dramatically. It is a simple exercise\, it’s just not easy! \nWade Jackson is New Zealand’s leading improv teacher. He has spent the last 20 years ‘mastering’ The Cinema Game and is nowhere near it. He is however able to show others the path to one of the most demanding acting exercises of all time. \nWade has a Post Graduate Diploma in Drama (University of Auckland) and has taught this workshop in Belgium\, at the Chicago Improv Festival (USA) and throughout New Zealand.
