DESCRIPTION:What is the “game of the scene?” Why should I worry about this? Isn’t who/what/where enough? \nWho/what/where is a wonderful vehicle… but “game” will make your scenes GO! In this workshop\, we will work on giving your scenes focus and purpose by identifying and playing game. Practice finding games in organic scenes\, as well as starting scenes with a game in mind. We’ll also work your scenework muscles– playing with environment and emotion\, rather than doing “talking head” scenes. Improv is a live artform\, which means good improv should be good theatre! \nAbout Suzi: \nSuzi Barrett has been studying/performing/teaching improv for 13 years. She began in Chicago\, as a student of The Second City and ImprovOlympic\, and is a graduate of the Upright Citizens Brigade training center in L.A. (where she currently teaches). Suzi spent three years as a member of the famed Boom Chicago sketch and improv ensemble in Amsterdam\, and toured most of Europe with their touring company. It’s a great way to explore your creativity\, hone presentation skills\, explore spontaneity\, work without a script\, and become more confident and comfortable speaking in front of others. Kevin Garcia Doyle (vocals) has been improvising in Hawaii for over twenty years. He was a founding member of Loose Screws and of the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival\, and has written\, directed and acted in shows for University of Hawaii at Mānoa\, Kumu Kahua\, Mānoa Valley Theater\, All The World’s A Stage and the Honolulu Theater for Youth. Doyle was the director of Loose Screws’ nationally acclaimed “Screwbuki\,” which toured to Chicago\, Los Angeles and Seattle. Professionally\, he is the director of the School of the Arts at Mid-Pacific Institute. \nSean T.C. O’Malley (vocals\, electric guitar) is a Philadelphia-born improviser\, musician\, and playwright who has lived in Honolulu for twenty years. During his 17-year stint as a founding member of improv group Loose Screws\, he directed an improvised full-length musical\, “Loose Screws Sing!?!” and was featured on shamisen in the nationally acclaimed improvised Kabuki\, “Screwbuki.” He’s composed musical scores for theatrical works as diverse as Euripedes’ The Trojan Women and Lee Cataluna’s Ulua: The Musical. His theatrical scripts have been performed at Kumu Kahua Theatre (Island Skin Songs\, To the Last Hawaiian Soldier\, and the Po’okela-award winning Wilcox’s Shot)\, the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (Politicians\, Elections\, and Other Obscenities) and Honolulu Theatre for Youth. \nEric Folk (drums) plays skins for The Kaimana Band\, The Eric Lee Band\, and Honolulu crowd favorite Family Dinner. \nBri X (bass) has played rock’n’roll since the 80s with too many bands you’ve never heard of. \nSean and R. have been improvising together since 1993. Come watch as the students showcase what they have learned in the last 8 weeks\, the students then join forces in the second half with Chris Riel\, Shawn Thompson\, Jasmine Fernandez and Aaron Pughes! Bring a sense of humor and be prepared to give suggestions for this once in a lifetime show! \nLight refreshments provided\, you can also bring your own food and drinks. \nWard’s Rafters is on Maunaloa between 15th and 16th Ave in Kaimuki. All students will walk away with more confidence in themselves and will be ready to face whatever the world throws at them! \nClasses will be taught by local actor Kimee Balmilero (Original Broadway Cast of Mamma Mia\, Hi-5\, Miss Saigon). Kimee has performed sketch and improv in LA in such venues as UCB\, iO West and Second City. Kevin Garcia Doyle (vocals) has been improvising in Hawaii for over twenty years. He was a founding member of Loose Screws and of the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival\, and has written\, directed and acted in shows for University of Hawaii at Mānoa\, Kumu Kahua\, Mānoa Valley Theater\, All The World’s A Stage and the Honolulu Theater for Youth. Doyle was the director of Loose Screws’ nationally acclaimed “Screwbuki\,” which toured to Chicago\, Los Angeles and Seattle. Professionally\, he is the director of the School of the Arts at Mid-Pacific Institute. \nSean T.C. O’Malley (vocals\, electric guitar) is a Philadelphia-born improviser\, musician\, and playwright who has lived in Honolulu for twenty years. During his 17-year stint as a founding member of improv group Loose Screws\, he directed an improvised full-length musical\, “Loose Screws Sing!?!” and was featured on shamisen in the nationally acclaimed improvised Kabuki\, “Screwbuki.” He’s composed musical scores for theatrical works as diverse as Euripedes’ The Trojan Women and Lee Cataluna’s Ulua: The Musical. Brown performed his Solo Improv Extravaganza form at the Improvaganza 2012 Hawaii Festival of Improvisation. \nSolo Improv: Playing with Yourself \nDescription \nSolo improv is really all about learning how to play with others. When you are solely responsible for creating everything on stage\, you begin to appreciate decisions made by your scene partner when performing in a traditional team.\nImprovising by yourself is not a new concept and it doesn’t teach you new principles\, but it does make you remember the ones you often forget about on stage.Things you will re-learn in this workshop:\n-Saying ‘Yes’ to yourself.\nWe often concentrate on saying ‘yes’ to our scene partners and forget to say ‘yes’ to ourselves. The power of saying ‘Yes’ to yourself is liberating and refreshing.\n-Silence is golden.\nAs scary as silence can sometimes be\, it is a tool for you to use in your scene work. Know the difference between doing nothing and having nothing to do.\n-Physicality\, movement\, and object work.\nThere is no solo improv without being active on stage. Because\, lets be honest\, who wants to see a person sitting in a chair having a conversation with them self?\n-Knock\, knock. Who’s there? It’s me!\nLearn how to create multiple personalities on stage that the audience can also see and hear and how to manage them. It’s actually easier than you might think!Bio\nMike began his comedy career in 2005 as a Philadelphia Phillies “Phanstormer\,” performing on-field sketches for the crowd. He founded The Mike Brown Solo Improv Extravaganza\, co-founded Gods Little Atheist\, and performs with New Jersey indie team Howdy Stranger. Whether you’re an actor\, lawyer\, comedian\, entrepreneur\, dog trainer\, or whatever improv teaches you to think on your feet and allows you to adapt to unexpected events. Improv is all about reacting\, staying focused and being in the moment. This workshop will introduce to the wonderful world of improvisation. Absolutely no experience required…and “NON-PERFORMERS” ARE VERY WELCOME! Zero Fear…ALL FUN! You will play and learn in a safe\, positive and supportive environment. You’ll loosen up and discover that super quick person that’s living inside your heart. All students will walk away with more confidence in themselves and will be ready to face whatever the world throws at them! \nClasses will be taught by local actor Kimee Balmilero (Original Broadway Cast of Mamma Mia\, Hi-5\, Miss Saigon). Kimee has performed sketch and improv in LA in such venues as UCB\, iO West and Second City. She’s received most of her improv training from UCB in LA and continues to take classes in LA with pro improvisers Suzi Barrett\, Eugene Cordero\, Eliza Skinner and Jim Woods. She’s super stoked to share what she knows with the Hawaii improv community.

DESCRIPTION:On The Spot Improv will present “The 3rd Annual Project Genre Showcase on Saturday January 5 at the Arts at Marks Garage at 8:00pm. Project Genre is a program developed by On The Spot Improv to create new improvised shows inspired by researching genres of movies\, theater\, television\, and literary styles. This year Project Genre Showcase will feature two improvised shows based on movie styles. \nThe first is the world premiere of Dead Poets Club. A funny and poignant look at such coming of age dramas as “Dead Poets Society\, History Boys”\, and “Finding Forester.” The Dead Poets Club explores all the angst of young people struggling to find themselves. And with the guidance of their mentor\, an out of the box thinking maverick\, they might find out who they really are inside. The cast of Dead Poets Club is encouraging audience members to bring in original works of poetry and art to use in their improvisation. \nNext “On The Spot” will present their homage to classic film noirs of the 1940’s and 1950’s with “The Slow Fall Down.” The show is an improvised anthology of stories inspired by such classic movies like Double Indemnity\, Detour\, D.O.A\, Lady from Shanghai\, and The Maltese Falcon. On The Spot will also be drawing inspiration from the biggest stars of the era using all the charm of Humphrey Bogart\, The bravado of Edward G Robinson\, and the Sex Appeal of Lauren Bacall\, The Slow Fall Down is sure to entertain those familiar and unfamiliar with the genre. \n“The 3rd Annual Project Genre Showcase” starts at 8:00pm on January 5th at the Arts at Marks Garage.
