Now’s the time to prepare yourself to do your best work when you’re in the audition room. \nIn this class\, you will learn audition technique\, script analysis and scene work. Improvisers will learn essential tools to aid them in the business of acting and will learn how to create emotional truth on camera in a safe\, non judgmental environment. \nThe last 15-20 minutes of class will be used for a talk back about how to start putting yourself out there. \nAll levels welcome!\n*this class is limited to 12 students \nAbout The Instructor:\nSarah Halford is a Hawaii-born artist who has been acting professionally in Los Angeles for the last few years. She holds her Masters in Acting from one of the top grad schools in the country\, UC San Diego. While in Los Angeles\, she starred as Heather Chandler in the world premiere of Heathers: The Musical. Other professional TV and Film Credits include: “Anger Management\,” “Cristela\,” “Road Hard\,” with comedian Adam Carolla\, and numerous national commercials. Sarah has had experiences testing for top network pilots\, and circulating with the most prominent casting directors in Los Angeles and New York. Since moving home\, she was featured in the Hawaii premiere of Mamma Mia! at Diamond Head Theatre\, and received a Po’okela award for her performance. Limited Space. \nClass Dates (UPDATED): \nMay 15\, 22\, 29 (No class on 5/1 and 5/8) \nJune 5\, 12\, 19\, 26 \nJuly 10 \nSorry\, there are no drop ins for this class. \nAbout the instructor: \nHawaii born actor Kimee Balmilero has been performing professionally since 1994 thanks to her first paying gig as “Woody Woodpecker” at an Earth Day Fair.  Other professional credits include: The 3X Emmy Nominated series “Hi-5\,” the Original Broadway Cast of “Mamma Mia\,” “Miss Saigon\,” and most recently\, the recurring role of Dr. Noelani Cunha on “Hawaii Five-0.” While working in NYC and LA for 15+ years\, she studied improv & sketch comedy at the famed Uprights Citizens Brigade Theatre in Hollywood. \nKimee has performed at such venues as: Radio City Music Hall\, The Kodak Theater\, UCB in LA\, Second City-Hollywood and iO West and has been featured on “The Today Show\,” “Live with Regis and Kelly\,” and “The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.” \nSince moving back to Hawaii in 2012\, Kimee founded and is the “Head Sillypino” of  improvhi a company and website dedicated to sketch and improv comedy in Hawaii. \nIn March 2015\, she created and produced the first ever Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival at the Honolulu Museum of Art’s Doris Duke Theater. \nA lifetime student of the legendary Ronald E. Bright\, Kimee made her directorial debut with the Hawai’i Premiere of “Mamma Mia” at the historical Diamond Head Theatre in Honolulu. join instructor Bobbi Block for a half-day workshop exploring the Actors’ Improv Technique™.


This workshop teaches a honed method to create truth-inspired\, emotionally grounded characters and build compelling realistic scenes.  Just as writers are advised to ‘write what they know\,’ participants are taught to improvise from their own experiences and meld fact with fiction. This method allows both comic and dramatic moments to arise organically.  Participants learn to create a strong emotional point of view\, exploring both verbal and nonverbal offers (silence\, breathing\, physical contact with scene partner).   Participants also learn how to simultaneously behave as both actor and playwright to build the tension and dramatic arc of a scene.  When this method is integrated\, the result combines the playfulness of spontaneously-generated work with the integrity of scripted theater. \nOPEN TO ALL LEVELS 12pm – 3pm \nInstructor Bio:   \nBobbi Block is the Founder/Producing Artistic Director of the critically acclaimed Tongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater.  Tongue & Groove works in the style of Actors Improv taught in this workshop.  For more information and to view video clips of T&G shows\, go to tongue-groove.com. 

Bobbi was invited to create LEAP: The Actors’ Improv Experiment\, for the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival\, for which she taught and directed veteran scripted actors in their first improvised show.  Bobbi improvises with Barrymore Award recipient ComedySportz Philadelphia\, where she was the Co-Producer and Education Director for 15 years and Artistic Director for 2 years. (comedysportzphilly.com) \nIn addition\, she performed longform improv for twelve years with the popular collaborative five-member ensemble\, LunchLady Doris\, and performed with the interdisciplinary improvisational theatre company\, Playback Philadelphia.

Bobbi has a Masters degree in Theatre\, and has trained with master improvisors at renowned improv theaters around the US. \nShe currently teaches Improvisation at Temple University and Drexel University in Philadelphia.  She taught Improv at New Zealand’s University of Otago and throughout New Zealand and Australia.  She returned to NZ to direct her signature format\, SECRETS\, for the New Zealand Fringe Festival.  In addition\, she has toured Europe teaching Actors’ Improv to various improv groups\, and has also taught Improv in Rio De Janeiro\, Brazil\, where SECRETS continues to be performed. \nShe won the 2008 Philadelphia City Paper Award: Actress Who Will Lead Improvisation to the Promised Land.

Whether you want to be better at rhyming\, learn new musical genres\, or to sing a heartfelt ballad about a paintbrush…even if you are brand new to making up songs this workshop can help you to “Sing out\, Louise.” Brian is an award-winning composer who has written songs for feature films and performed his music since 1986 at theaters in Australia\, Germany\, The British Isles\, New York\, Seattle\, San Francisco and Los Angeles. His original improvised song formats\, “The Hell Show” and “Tiny and Les\,” have been performed at BATS\, ACME Hollywood and Impro Theatre. Brian’s ongoing Wednesday night Improvised Song workshop is now in it’s second year. (all levels) \nAbout the instructor:\nBrian is the Associate Artistic Director for the award-winning Impro Theatre. He was the Theatre Games consultant for Francis Ford Coppola on Bram Stoker’s Dracula (working with Gary Oldman\, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Tom Waits) and dialogue coach on Mr. Coppola’s 1996 feature Jack\, with Robin Williams\, Diane Lane and Jennifer Lopez. He teaches personal presentation skills for the private sector and has been the program director for public persona development in SEIU’s BOLD Institute since 2003. Brian was casting director and composer for BOO! at New York New York Hotel and Casino\, a Las Vegas improv-sketch revue in which he starred from 2002-2003. Brian was the creator and Artistic Director of Pulp Playhouse\, which was in residency at San Francisco’s Eureka Theater and was the first improvisation group to be invited to HBO’s U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. He has written three solo shows\, Johnny Lonely’s Unhappy Hour\, Seasonal Help and Captaining Titanic Leadership. He was a fringe finalist at the Adelaide Fringe in Australia for Johnny Lonely\, opened for Tenacious D at Largo in Los Angeles and headlined the Seattle Film Festival. DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop:\nWhat is the “game of the scene?” Why should I worry about this? Isn’t who/what/where enough? Who/what/where is a wonderful vehicle… but “game” will make your scenes GO! In this workshop\, we will work on giving your scenes focus and purpose by identifying and playing game. We’ll also work your scenework muscles– playing with environment and emotion\, rather than doing “talking head” scenes. Characters are richer\, instantly fleshed out and exciting\, all leading to playing people you’ve never inhabited\, in scenes you’ve never before played. More being…less thinking! \nAbout the Instructor \nDavid Razowsky is the respected former artistic director of the Second City Los Angeles. As a performer at Second City he worked with Steve Carrel\, Stephen Colbert\, Rachel Dratch\, and Chris Farley\, among others. David has directed Second City in Chicago\, Los Angeles\, Detroit\, and The Second City National Touring Company. David is a consultant for Dreamworks\, and has directed two of Amsterdam’s Boom Chicago theatre’s productions– RockStars\, and Live at the Leidseplein – Your Privacy is Our Business. He is a member of the Reduced Shakespeare Company\, and performed in their sold-out run The Complete Works of William Shakespeare\, Abridged at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. He is a co-founder of The Annoyance Theatre\, and has written for The Simpsons Comic\, The Simpsons nationally syndicated Sunday comic strip\, and was commissioned to write a film treatment for The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening. David is the voice of Dixon\, the world’s coolest adult\, in ABC’s animated series\, The Weekenders\, and has appeared on Spin City\, Roseanne\, and Late Night with David Letterman as the voice of Albert Brook’s parrot. Dave will be in Honolulu to teach master classes in May 2015.

Improv is all about responding to what is happening the moment. Good improvisers act in the present. They aren’t stuck in the past or planning for the future. Improv is chock-full of exercises and games designed to get you out of your head and into the present moment. Think Fast will be covering many of these in our Improv Skills: The Moment classes in February. \nFebruary’s Improv Skills Drop-In improv classes are focused on getting you to focus on the present moment to be a more effective performer and just enjoy life more. Topics to be covered include: getting out of your head\, focusing on the moment\, listening\, and heightening/supporting what’s happening on-stage. \nOur Improv Skills are every Tuesday and open to everyone regardless of improv experience level. If you’ve never improvised before\, that’s great! Our instructors are gentle and have plenty of experience to share. \nAbout The Instructor \nDrew McCalmon has over 15 years improv and theater performance experience. He received his improvisational training in Florida from the renowned SAK Comedy Lab in Orlando where he was a show host as well as well as a member of Generation ‘S’. Drew is also an alumni member of Absent Minded Improv in Orlando and Comedy Buffet in Winter Haven. Since moving to Hawaii in 2012 Drew has become an active member in the improv community and joined Think Fast soon after arriving. Drew created and directs the character-driven long form “The BFF Show” which appeared in Improvaganza 2014. \nClasses are held every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:30.

DESCRIPTION:THE FIREBALL THEORY\nThis workshop presents Jill Bernard’s Fireball Theory and offers exercises to help you improvise faster and harder than you can judge yourself. You will learn to metaphorically hit the scene running and outrun the explosion of self-loathing and doubt like an action movie hero outruns a fireball thus defying the laws of physics. Please wear closed toe shoes to this workshop. \nAbout The Instructor:\nJill Bernard has been performing with ComedySportz-Twin Cities since 1993\, and is a founding member of HUGE Theater in Uptown Minneapolis. Her one-woman improv piece\, Drum Machine\, has been featured in over forty improv festivals. She has taught and performed improv in Norway\, Australia\, Canada\, Argentina\, Peru\, Italy\, Germany and over thirty-five of the United States; and also on an episode of MTV “Made.” She is one-half of the duo SCRAM with Joe Bill of the Annoyance Theater. An Artistic Associate of the Chicago Improv Festival\, she has studied at the Annoyance Theater\, Improv Olympic\, the Brave New Workshop and other organizations; and is the recipient of the 2005 Chicago Improv Festival Avery Schreiber Ambassador of Improv Award\, and the 2007 Miami Improv Festival award for Best Solo Show. She was also the winner\, in January 2000\, of the Executive Vice President Award for outstanding contribution to Human Resources\, the highest award in the American Express Human Resources function. SUMMARY:2-Day Musical Improv Workshop w/ Jill Bernard
DESCRIPTION:If you think counting beats and saving rhymes is tough\, you’re right. While those tools make for powerful improvised song structures for the pros\, what about the rest of us who feel crippled by them? This workshop will cover how to use 1) simple repetition\, 2) expressive emotion\,  3) simple repetition to create catchy tunes that get you by\, and more! \nAbout The Instructor:\nJill Bernard has been performing with ComedySportz-Twin Cities since 1993\, and is a founding member of HUGE Theater in Uptown Minneapolis. Her one-woman improv piece\, Drum Machine\, has been featured in over forty improv festivals. She has taught and performed improv in Norway\, Australia\, Canada\, Argentina\, Peru\, Italy\, Germany and over thirty-five of the United States; and also on an episode of MTV “Made.” She is one-half of the duo SCRAM with Joe Bill of the Annoyance Theater. An Artistic Associate of the Chicago Improv Festival\, she has studied at the Annoyance Theater\, Improv Olympic\, the Brave New Workshop and other organizations; and is the recipient of the 2005 Chicago Improv Festival Avery Schreiber Ambassador of Improv Award\, and the 2007 Miami Improv Festival award for Best Solo Show. She was also the winner\, in January 2000\, of the Executive Vice President Award for outstanding contribution to Human Resources\, the highest award in the American Express Human Resources function. She’s also the voice of God\, the Holy Ghost\, the Virgin Mary and other religious figures in a series of confirmation videos for Sparkhouse. \nWorkshop Cost:\n$135 for two days\n$75 for one day\n(priority goes to those who can participate in both days. one day tickets will be available 2 weeks before the first class day if workshop doesn’t sell out)

SUMMARY:Improv Skills Class: Teamwork
DESCRIPTION:“Unity is strength… when there is teamwork and collaboration\, wonderful things can be achieved.” \nMattie Stepanek \nGood teamwork skills improves performance\, efficiency and trust within a group. Improv is a collaborative art form and teamwork is essential. There are hundreds of improv exercises and games designed to build trust\, support and group mind within an improv team. Think Fast will be covering many of these in our Improv Skills: Teamwork classes in January. \nJanuary’s Improv Skills Drop-In improv classes are focused on building your teamwork skills to be a more effective performer and person in general. Topics to be covered include: “Yes\, and”\, support\, group mind\, communication\, trust and risk-taking. \nOur Improv Skills are every Tuesday and open to everyone regardless of improv experience level. If you’ve never improvised before\, that’s great! Our instructors are gentle and have plenty of experience to share. \nDrew McCalmon has over 15 years improv and theater performance experience. He received his improvisational training in Florida from the renowned SAK Comedy Lab in Orlando where he was a show host as well as well as a member of Generation ‘S’. Drew is also an alumni member of Absent Minded Improv in Orlando and Comedy Buffet in Winter Haven. Since moving to Hawaii in 2012 Drew has become an active member in the improv community and joined Think Fast soon after arriving.
